About BESS
A common criticism of renewable energy, such as solar or wind power, is that it’s not always sunny or windy. Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS, will help to remove this problem. BESS allows us to store extra electricity to be distributed at a later point, when it’s needed.
The below diagram helps to explain why, and when, BESS is needed.
Lightrock will only propose BESS projects that are quiet, safe, and capable of being blended into the landscape with screening. For standalone BESS, we aim to provide a 20+% biodiversity net gain (BNG), which is double the legal requirement, prioritising on-site BNG. At Westfield Energy Conservation Park, our BNG is combined with the co-located solar so we would anticipate a much higher increase across the combined scheme. We commit to:
Have regular and detailed dialogue with the local fire and rescue service, taking on board any safety advice
Provide meaningful community consultation
Use modern, liquid-cooled technology that cannot be heard from local properties
Significantly exceed legal minimum requirements with for biodiversity net gain
Following early consultation and where we feel the scheme will bring overall benefit to society, submit a full application to the local planning authority and continue to listen to your comments
Electricity storage will enable us to use energy more flexibly and de-carbonise our energy system cost-effectively. By Maximising the usable output from intermittent low carbon generation, including the cheapest generation from onshore wind and solar, will not only make cheaper household bills possible, but it avoids or postpones the need for costly network upgrades which cost the taxpayer.
